Rainbow lab
Purpose: The purpose of the rainbow lab was to make layers of different colored water. We put different amounts of salt in different cups of water.
Hypothesis: I think if we pour each of the different color waters then we will be able to make multiple layers of water. We will be able to make a rainbow with the water.
Materials: Different colored food coloring, Salt, Water, Beaker(2 150mL), Stir Stick, Graduated Cylinder(1 100mL), Pipette, White Background Paper, and a Scale.
Procedure: (BLUE)First have one 150mL beaker filled with 60mL of water. Next measure 16.0 grams of salt using the scale. After pour the salt in the water and stir the water until the salt has completely dissolved and then put 2 drops of blue food coloring. Finally pour the first color of the rainbow in the graduated cylinder. (GREEN)First have one 150mL beaker filled with 60mL of water. Next measure 11.7 grams of salt using the scale. After pour the salt in the water and stir the water until the salt has completely dissolved then put 2 drops of green food coloring in the water. Finally slightly tilt the graduated cylinder and carefully pour the green water into the water, now you have the second color of the rainbow. (YELLOW)First have one 150mL beaker filled with 60mL of water. Next measure 7.2 grams of salt using the scale. After pour the salt into the water and stir the water until the salt has completely dissolved and then put 2 drops of yellow food coloring into the water. Finally slightly tilt the graduated cylinder and carefully pour the yellow colored water and now you have the third color of the rainbow. (1 YELLOW, 1 RED)first have one beaker filled with 60mL of water. Next measure 3.4 grams of salt using the scale. After pour the salt into the water and stir the water until the salt has completely dissolved and then put 1 drop of yellow food coloring and 1 drop of red food coloring in the water. Finally you have the fourth color of the rainbow. (RED)First have one 150mL beaker filled with 60mL of water. Next put 2 drops of red food coloring in the water. Finally you have the final color of the rainbow. If you have done the lab properly you have multiple layers of water in the graduate cylinder.
Data: N/A
Conclusion: What I have learned from this lab was how to make a rainbow using water and salt. Also before I didn't know that salt made the density of water increase. At first I thought the water was going to mix. But once I redid the lab I made multiple layer in the graduated cylinder and learned how to make a rainbow. Now I know if I ever wanted to do the lab again I can do the lab a home with salt water and a scale.
